Hay Feeder - Simple and Inexpensive
I want to share with you a simple and inexpensive way to feed hay in your barn. Hay feeders can be expensive. I have a large hay feeder that holds (1) two-string bale of hay and I have several of these smaller hay feeders screwed into the stall walls of my barn. They hold about two flakes of hay each. They are spread out so my goats, alpacas and mini horse can all get to a place to eat without being crowded. I mainly use these in the winter or when I have babies and moms separated from the herd. What I am using as hay feeders are WIRE CLOTHES HAMPERS. I purchased these from Walmart.
Purchase the hamper and then remove the fabric insert. Take a thin board that is about 2” wide and strong (don’t use cheap wood) and make sure it is long enough to run the full width of the top of the hamper with a couple of inches extra on each side. Run the board through the hamper and attach it with screws to your barn stall. My barn stalls are wood so they are easy to screw into. You can improvise to attach these to your wall/stall/fence or whatever works best for you. These are $20 each and sturdy enough for goats and other small livestock!
